Raised in a military family, Hank was always taught the principles of resilience and perseverance. From a young age, Hank knew that he had to be a fighter like his father, his grandfather and those before him. His grandfather, Henry C. Boyd Sr, was at the forefront of the civil rights movement. He attended the University of Denver at a time when it was shunned upon for black men. Later, Hank’s father Henry Boyd Jr would also defy the odds by pioneering education programs for black men at the University of Missouri– this was not very well received by many white professors as they questioned the students worthiness solely because of the color of their skin. Coming from a family of civil rights activists, it was only natural for Hank to follow along the same path.
Hank attended Paint Branch High School in Montgomery County, Maryland where he served as President of the National Honor Society, and was involved in the debate team, the forensics team, and the Student Government Association. When it came time to apply to college Hank submitted his applications to prestigious institutions including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Princeton, and West Point. Ultimately, it was Princeton University which Hank would go on to choose after falling in love with the campus during a tour.
At Princeton, Hank was able to grow and develop emotionally and intellectually. Hank was no longer the smartest kid in the room, he was humbled by his experiences, and he knew that to achieve greatness he had to push even harder then usual. After Princeton, Hank would go on to get his Master of Business Administration from University of California at Berkeley. He later attended Duke University where he earned his PhD and would go on to University of Wisconsin at Madison to pursue a law degree.
Every step of the way, Hank was shaped by his experiences and challenged to achieve the impossible. As his forefathers before him, Hank is inspired by his challenges to create a better and brighter future for his community. In his spare time, Hank volunteers at Olive Branch Community Church where he teaches Math to black students. He also volunteers at homeless shelters and soup kitchens in Howard County and Baltimore. Hank enjoys listening to jazz music, including the likes of John Coltrane and Miles Davis. He also loves reading books and occasionally watching movies. One of his favorite movies is The Godfather. Hank values time with his wife and daughter and their furry friend, Yuki.
Growing up in Maryland, Hank has deep roots within the community and enjoys spending any free time with family, friends, by volunteering, and by frequenting local sports games and local restaurants.
